The Mort Johnston Professional Development Scholarship has been established for the purpose of providing financial assistance to those seeking to further their own professional development in ways that also benefit the Australian banana industry.
Despite the size of our industry and its historical focus on research and innovation it is perhaps surprising that it has taken until now to establish such a scholarship program. However, those among us who knew Mort either personally or by reputation would agree that there could not be a more fitting tribute to the man than to have a have a professional development scholarship named in his honour.
Of course the scholarship would be of little consequence without funds to make available to potential applicants so ABGC are extremely pleased that Amcor Limited has generously agreed to donate $10,000 to kick-start the fund. ABGC would also like to formally acknowledge the generosity of Loscam Limited for their donation of $5,000 and Jill Johnston for her $10,000 donation in behalf of the family. In addition the ABGC has also decided to contribute $10,000 to the scholarship.
Scholarships can be awarded across a wide range of endeavours with a total of three scholarships to be awarded each year. Applications close on 29 August with successful applicants announced shortly afterwards. They will also be announced in the December edition of “Australian Bananas” magazine and on this website.
Those companies or individuals that would like to make a donation to the scholarship fund can do so by contacting ABGC, details of which are available in the "Contact Us" link above.
Remember that the scholarship is open to anyone who is able to demonstrate that furthering their professional development via a scholarship will ultimately benefit the Australian banana industry. The link below will access the application form with criteria and requirements.
